Living with Mahogany
A Guide for International Owners

MM has been exporting premium solid mahogany furniture to discerning homes in over 16 countries since 1980. We manage the complete journey — and we are completely transparent about what international ownership of tropical hardwood involves.

The Complete Export Service

When you commission MM from overseas, you commission a complete service — not just a product. We manage every element of the export process from our end, so that the only thing you need to do is tell us what you want and where to send it.

Expert Packing

Every MM piece exported is packed to our exacting standards for long-distance transit — protective wrapping, custom crating where required, and handling guidelines for the receiving team.

Fumigation

All exported timber furniture is fumigated to international standards — meeting the phytosanitary requirements of destination countries and protecting the integrity of the piece in transit.

Documentation & Customs

We handle all export documentation, customs declarations, and regulatory paperwork on the Sri Lanka side. Our experienced team knows the requirements for each country we export to.

Trusted Shipping Partners

We work with reputed shipping agents with whom we have long-standing relationships - professionals who handle MM furniture with the care it deserves, from port to your door.

Insurance

Full transit insurance is available for every export shipment — giving you complete peace of mind from the moment the piece leaves our warehouse to the moment it arrives at your door.

Export Finishing

Pieces destined for export receive two additional finishing stages — our 14-stage process specifically calibrated to protect tropical mahogany timber from the climatic conditions it will encounter outside Sri Lanka.

What You Should Know About Mahogany Abroad

We have been manufacturing and exporting mahogany furniture since 1980. We know this material intimately. And we believe that the most important thing we can do for our international customers is tell them the truth about what owning a piece of tropical hardwood outside the tropics involves.

Mahogany Breathes

Mahogany is a porous tropical timber. Even after seasoning and manufacturing, it continues to respond to its environment — expanding slightly in humid conditions, contracting in dry ones. We use carpentry methods that accommodate this natural movement wherever possible. But the extent of this movement depends on the environment the piece lives in.

Climate Matters

Significant variations in temperature and humidity — particularly in very dry centrally heated interiors during winter — can cause dimensional movement that may result in minor cracking or warping over time. No manufacturer of luxury tropical hardwood can guarantee against this entirely. What we can do — and do — is mitigate it through our seasoning programme, our export finishing process, and the guidance we provide on placement and care.

Our Recommendations for International Owners

Use a Humidifier

In rooms where your MM furniture lives, a humidifier during dry seasons significantly reduces the risk of timber movement. Units are relatively low cost and excellent for your own health as well.

Avoid Heat Sources

Keep MM pieces away from direct sunlight, radiators, fireplaces, and air conditioning units. Heat and direct cold air both accelerate moisture loss from the timber.

Choose Wisely for Large Items

Large plank items — full dining table tops, large wardrobes, beds with wide wooden headboards — carry a higher climate risk than smaller pieces. Sofas, dining chairs, and console tables have very low risk. We will always advise you on the best choices for your location.

Consider the Export Surcharge

Our export finishing process (the 14-stage calibrated process) carries an additional cost of approximately 10% above the standard price. We strongly recommend it for all export pieces — it is the single most effective protection available.

A Note on the Warranty

Our 10-year structural warranty is a return-to-manufacturer warranty. For exported pieces, returning a piece for repair is often not practical — the cost of shipping frequently exceeds the cost of local repair.

We are honest about this. What we offer instead is a standard of manufacture so high — less than 1% defect rate, 14 years without a single insect or rot defect — that the warranty is rarely called upon at all. And for any structural issue that does arise, we are always available to advise on local resolution.
